Decoherence time and entropy production in high energy Heavy Ion Collisons

چکیده
In high-energy hevy-ion collisons a sigifi cant amount of entropy can be produced merely by the decoherence of the individual nuclear multi-particle states. We argue that the time scales on which this happens are much shorter than 1 fm/c. Decoherence can therefore explain the very rapid onset of a behaviour which resembles that of a thermalised state of matter. The mechanisms responsible for the creation of entropy in a high energy heavy ion collision (HIC) are still purely understood. One aspect is that the decoherence of a quantum mechanical state (like the ground states of the colliding nuclei) leads to a loss of information and thus to the production of entropy according to

The Decoherence Time in High Energy Heavy Ion Collisions
We calculate the decoherence time of the ground state wave function of a nucleus in a high energy heavy ion collision. We define this time as the decay time of the ratio TrD/(TrD) of traces of the density matrix D. We find that this time is smaller or equal to 1/Qs, where the saturation scale Qs is defined within the color glass condensate model of parton saturation. Our result supports the not...
متن کاملDecoherence and entropy production in relativistic nuclear collisions
Short thermalization times of less than 1 fm/c for quark and gluon matter have been suggested by recent experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. It has been difficult to justify this rapid thermalization in first-principle calculations based on perturbation theory or the color glass condensate picture. Here, we address the related question of the decoherence of the gluon field, which...

When heavy ions collide at ultra-relativistic energy, thousands of particles are emitted and it is reasonable to attempt to use hydrodynamic descriptions, with suitable initial conditions, to describe the time evolution of the collisons. In the longitudinal direction pions seem to exhibit Landau flow. This simple model assumes that all the entropy in the collisions is created the instant the tw...
متن کاملHigh Density Qcd and Entropy Production at Heavy Ion Colliders
The role of entropy production in the context of probing QCD properties at high densities and finite temperatures in ultra-relativistic collisions of heavy nuclei is inspected. It is argued that the entropy generated in these reactions provides a powerful tool to investigate the space-time evolution and the question whether and how a deconfined plasma of quarks and gluons is formed. I will addr...
متن کاملS-matrix spin and parity decoherence and damping of coherent nuclear rotation: quantum chaos in dissipative heavy-ion collisions?
We extend the statistical reaction with memory approach to study off-diagonal spin and parity S-matrix energy autocorrelation in dissipative heavy-ion collisions. It is suggested that S-matrix spin and parity decoherence results in (i) damping of the coherent nuclear rotation and (ii) is a manifestation of quantum chaos in dissipative heavy-ion collisions.
